REMOTE-SHUTDOWN

REMOTE SHUTDOWN / REMOTE REBOOT

With this function, you can shut down or restart a Windows computer in the local network.

Two requirements must be met:

• The target computer must be reachable in the network.

• The user account used must have the required rights on the target computer.

Network setup

The target computer must be switched on and reachable in the local network. Make sure that the network profile on the target computer is set to "Private". In addition, "Network discovery" and "File and printer sharing" must be enabled in Windows for private networks. If the network profile is set to public, Windows hides the computer in the network. In this case, the remote command may fail even though the computer is switched on.

Enter the computer name of the target computer in the program.

Examples:

WORK-PC

LAPTOP

The computer name must be entered exactly as Windows knows the target computer in the network. An automatic search for computers is not used, because this is no longer reliable in home networks under modern Windows versions.

Setting up permissions

For remote shutdown, network availability alone is not sufficient. Windows checks on the target computer whether the user account used is allowed to shut down the computer over the network. The user account used must have the right "Force shutdown from a remote system" on the target computer. You can find this setting on the target computer under:

• Local Security Policy

• Local Policies

• User Rights Assignment

• Force shutdown from a remote system

Normally, the group "Administrators" or the local administrator account used should be entered there. After changing these user rights, a restart of the target computer may be required before remote shutdown works.

Note about the group "Everyone"

The group "Everyone" can technically allow remote shutdown. For security reasons, however, this setting is not recommended. It is better to enter only the group "Administrators" or a user account that has been explicitly created for this purpose.

Typical error messages

Error 53:

The target computer was not found in the network. Check the computer name, the network profile, network discovery, file and printer sharing, and the firewall settings.

Access denied:

The target computer was found, but the user account used does not have the required rights for remote shutdown. Check the user right "Force shutdown from a remote system" on the target computer. After changing this setting, a restart of the target computer may be required.
